LASER - Home Safety Area

Every year in the UK almost 4,000 people die in accidents in the home and 2.7 million attend accident and emergency departments seeking treatment. But, because accidents happen behind closed doors in isolated incidents they rarely attract public and media attention.

Home Safety The majority of LASER schemes construct realistic rooms in a house or garden including, kitchen, living room, hall and bedroom. Children are encouraged to identify the hazards, discuss how the situation could be made safer, and where appropriate encouraged to make risk judgments and take action.

Accredited schemes ensure their Home Safety scenarios contain the following: -

  • A home can be a dangerous place
  • Children have some responsibility for their own safety
  • Children are able to recognise and deal with hazards


Children are encouraged through role play, discussion with practitioners, traditional teaching and simple coaching techniques to: -

  • Identify hazards - what is dangerous within the scenario?
  • Assess the danger - how might it cause harm?
  • Control the risk - how could the likelihood on an injury be reduced?
